Question of the Day

Do you look forward to work? Will you continue to work after you start a family? If you stay home with children now, do you ever miss work?

I look forward to work most days, but definitely not every day. I think when we start a family I either won't work at all or will work part time (and by part time I mean 2 days a week at a clothing store!).

Just to clarify, I know staying at home is work! I mean work in an office : )

Work seems to be necessary for most couples in today's society. While I wish that I would be able to work part time when I have children, unfortunately, I don't think we could make it without my income contribution.

But for some families the income contribution just barely pays for child care.

I do not look forward to work (need to find a new job obviously). I do not plan to work when we have kids (I'm lucky and will probably be able to to this). But, I do want to work part time at some point. What about you?

I would like to work part time when my kids are older. But I definitely want to stay home with my kids, even if it means giving up some material things. I think that is the case with most of my friends, but I don't know if that is realistic. I wonder if there has been a generational shift- I don't feel like my friends "want it all" ie, career and family. And they all went to very good universities and have impressive jobs. - LG

You can "have it all" but it's impossible (or at least, very, very stressful) to have it all at the same time.

This is such a hard question & one I've been dealing with lately. I do like my job and look forward to it most days. I am due in about 3 months & am planning to return to work after a 12-week leave. Scary? Yes. Home with twins 24/7? That's scary too. I am hoping that we can develop something a little more flexible - work from home or a part-time schedule. We use my income, so at this point, I can't really consider staying home full time. Ideally, I think it would be great to be home for a year or two, then return to work.

At least 90% of the time I don't look forward to work. I work purely for money, and not for enjoyment. I can't wait to be a SAHM (me working right now will allow us to be able to do this).
