Wedding Wednesday: If a tree falls...

If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it, does it make a noise? Housework is something no one notices unless it is not done. I am trying to get to something here...if certain wedding "traditions" do not happen, does anyone notice? Or even care if they do notice? Have you ever been to a wedding where you left and realized the reception didn't include [fill in the blank]? As weddings become more personalized and DIY, I wonder if some of the big wedding traditions will fall by the wayside. What do you think?

(Personally, I loathe and have always loathed the bouquet toss,-even when I was 22 and had only had to participate in it once. My favorite scene EVER from Sex and the City is when the group lets the bouquet fall at their feet. If I never went to another wedding with a bouquet toss, I wouldn't mind one bit. Or even notice.)

I am so glad most brides are abandoning the garter tradition. Yuck!

as someone who just finished a DIY wedding, we abandoned MUCH of the traditional stuff. and although no one would tell me otherwise, i don't think anyone noticed. and maybe not everyone feels this way, but during these lousy economic times, and with threats of layoffs, i say good riddance to all of the overdone and expensive traditions.

I think you are so right about more brides being willing to forgo these obnoxious and pointless traditions -- garter toss, bouquet toss, foo-foo this and overdone that. Your wedding should reflect your own taste, not what the wedding magazines or your mother or your best friend say you should do. And I say, "bravo!"

At our wedding, I didn't toss the bouquet (for the very reason you mentioned in your post! It is humiliating!), and my husband didn't get my garter until we were in the privacy of our hotel suite (hello... his 90 year old grandmother was there. How can people reach up skirts for garters with 90 year old grandmothers present?!?). No one noticed that a thing was missing and now, almost two years later, if it comes up in conversation with a wedding guest, they'll say "Oh, yeah... I didn't even realize you hadn't done that!"
