As some of you may have noticed, I have been a little bit MIA since moving to New York. Unfortunately, I have really gotten out of the habit of cooking or doing any sort of home related activities since I have been moving from sub-lease to sub-lease. However, I have started looking into an apartment of my own, and I am so excited. It is funny the things one has to give up in New York. And so, here are my list of desirables- if I am lucky, I may end up with two or three of these!
1. A full sized refrigerator
2. Laundry in my building
3. A dishwasher
4. Outdoor space (patio/roofdeck)
5. Doorman!
6. Closet space (ie, more than one)
Wish me luck- apartment hunting in Manhattan is a bear! - LG

How big is the average apartment in NYC?
Well, it just depends on where you live. I would say your average young family that is financially comfortable probably works with about 1,200 sq. ft. It really just depends. There are always articles in the Times about families that basically live in studios, but then there are obviously a lot of wealthy bankers with amazing loft spaces!
(A really nice one bedroom that goes for about $3500 per month is going to be about 600 sq ft.)
(Okay, I did some research. Let's say $2900 for 600 sq ft. Just depends a lot on neighborhood.)
Phooey on a dishwasher. It would be hard to live in such a small space without enough storage areas. It'd also be hard to entertain without a full sized refrigerator.
