Wedding Wednesday: Reader Query

A reader is wondering:

Do you all have any thoughts on New Year's Eve weddings? I think they would be fun for guests, but a nightmare to plan.

What do you all think?

I think this all rolls back into the "holiday long weekend wedding" issue.

I think the fact that you would not have to figure out something fun to do for New Year's Eve is a plus, but there are also so many negatives for both the couple and the guests. Aren't the holidays stressful enough?

I agree. It would be a guaranteed New Year's Eve party for your guests, but with all the stresses that come the week before a wedding it might not be worth it.

I think if you were having a small intimate wedding it might work. Yes it would be stressful but aren't all weddings? I kind of like the idea.

A New Year's Eve wedding might put an additional financial strain on everyone unless it's a small wedding. The cost of traveling is more expensive during the holidays and people might have to choose between being off at Christmas or New Years. Also, if you're marrying someone who has 276 fraternity brothers he has to invite, the alcohol bill could be outrageous! :)

Other than that, it would a nice time to get married and easy to remember the anniversary date!

I think that this is a big no no. As some other posters mentioned, increased travel costs would be astronomical, especially in a big city. Travel could also be a nightmare. Also, you would HAVE to let every guest bring a date, whether you knew that date or not...b/c it is New Year's Eve after all. I just think it is a lot to ask during such a crazy time of year.

That is a really good point about having to invite dates!

It would work better too if NY's Eve fell on a Thursday or Friday night.

What does everyone think about a late January/early February wedding? Except for weather (& floral) concerns, that seems like a good time to get married. It gives everyone something to look forward to, and the rates would be cheaper.

I wanted to get married in January -- platinum, golds, and other wintery colors sounded great to me!

I think its a bad idea. Vera Wang once said it wrong to think that people want to spend your holidays with you. Plus iwht new years falling during the week people will have to take the day off to go.

I am going to a New Years Eve wedding this year. My husband is a groomsman and we had no choice. But it has been a huge hassle and many of the guests are very PO'd about it. Very expensive. Plus, we will be on vacation till the 30 and have to fly out the next day to NJ for the wedding. Won't even be there for the rehearsal.

I always thought a late February wedding would be good b/c people are soooo bored with winter by then.
